"Hi, my name is [Your Name], Iโ€™m a pharmacy student. I'll just wash my hands and put on some PPE. Can I confirm your name and date of birth?"

"I understand you've been prescribed a new inhaler for your asthma. Today Iโ€™ll show you exactly how to use it and answer any questions. Is that okay? Are you happy to continue?"

๐Ÿ’Š Purpose of your inhaler

"This is a salbutamol inhaler, which is a reliever for when you have symptoms like breathlessness, wheeze, or chest tightness. It acts quickly to help you breathe easierโ€”only use it when needed, not regularly."

๐Ÿซ Step-by-step inhaler technique

  1. Ask: "Do you know which inhaler youโ€™ve been given? Hereโ€™s what it looks like."
  2. If using for the first time (or after a break): "Remove the cap, shake the inhaler, and release a test puff into the air to make sure itโ€™s working."
  3. "Check if thereโ€™s a dose counter. Make sure to order a new inhaler before it runs out."
  4. "Check the mouthpiece is clean, shake the inhaler well again."
  5. "Sit or stand upright, chin slightly upwards."
  6. "Breathe out gently away from the inhaler until your lungs feel empty."
  7. "Place your lips tightly around the mouthpiece to form a good seal."
  8. "Breathe in slowly and deeply. At the same time, press down on the canister to release a puff."
  9. "Continue to breathe in fully, then hold your breath for up to 10 seconds."
  10. "Breathe out slowly."
  11. "If you need a second puff, wait at least 30 seconds, then repeat the steps."

โœ… Summary & teach-back

"So to summarise: Use your inhaler when you get asthma symptoms. Shake it, breathe out away, press and inhale slowly, hold your breath, then breathe out. No need to rinse your mouth. Always carry your inhaler with you."

"Would you like to try showing me the steps? Do you have any questions?"

"Thanks for your timeโ€”Iโ€™ll dispose of PPE and wash my hands now."
